'Philosophy clarifies, whereas literature mystifies' - Iris Murdoch.
Soul Sauce seeks short fiction and poetry that yearn to do both the above; works that burn with thoughts the mind is unable to hold inside anymore, and scream to be put out in tangible form, even if only to better understand itself.
I am looking for a range of works that deal with the following - including but not limited to Western philosophy, Eastern philosophy, Ethics, Morality, Modern-day philosophy, Metaphysics, Logic, Epistemology as well as lesser-known schools of philosophical thought.
Works that inquire into the human nature, how it forms and functions within the parameters of 'life', this world, and beyond; works that inquire into the nature of time, space, the universe, creation/dissolution, works that seek to answer/understand/explain personal philosophical revelations are all sought.
Works need not be inspired directly from a philosopher or a philosophical work, but it is totally fine if they are (do specify the philosopher/philosophical work in this case).
The aim is to expand definitions and what the forms of fiction and poetry can do with such themes, so keep your interpretations/artistic skills free flowing.
Few well known examples of works for reference –
GENRE SPECIFICATIONS : FICTION
GENRE SPECIFICATIONS : POETRY
NOTE TO ALL READERS, WRITERS, CRITICS
In the deeply polarised world we live in, SSL strives to be a space where everyone can think and speak freely without compromising basic human dignity. I consider freedom of speech an absolute value and will not compromise on that.
The magazine seeks to be warm, open, and inclusive in the broadest and truest sense possible.
No abuse/discrimination of any kind towards any section of the society in the works will be tolerated (unless it is part of the lived experience of a character/characters which is shown to make the very point about their distress/societal conditions, and hence raise questions/awareness against discrimination or human nature or the concept of justice etc.
Similarly, on the other hand, no negation of anyone/any work that seems to disagree with an opposing view/opinion will be tolerated. If you do not have the patience to engage with an opinion/experience different to your own, I respectfully ask that you not engage with the works in this magazine. The very job of philosophy/literature sometimes is to ask and express uncomfortable themes and questions and thus make way for thought to flourish.
(Of course, it might be just a couple of works that might fall under this category or maybe none at all).
I will sincerely work with the assumption that everyone that submits or reads will do so with this responsibility and clarity, and your time with the magazine will be meaningful and thought provoking.
(I respect that some readers might not want to read certain themes, so trigger warnings will be provided wherever required so all readers can choose what they read and what they don’t).
Any queries, questions, clarification, feel free to email me.
Look forward to delve into your works!
With love,
Anvi
